Julia holds a diploma in textile design, she studied art at ISU, Ames, Iowa(USA) and textile design at „University of Fine Arts Hamburg“ (Hochschule für bildende Künste, HFBK Hamburg). After completing her degree at HFBK Hamburg, she went through a comprehensive training as a textile screenprinter at„The Fabric Workshop and Museum“ in Philadelphia (USA) and opened her own design and textile printing business „fabric affair“ as a team of designers in Hamburg. „fabric affair“ designed, developed and printed textiles on demand for magazines, like „Schöner Wohnen“ and „Brigitte“. On their 10 meter long printing table, they manufactured production of limited textile editions in collaboration with interior designers for hotels, cruiseships and a wide range of customers.
Since 2013 she is a lecturer for textile design and technologies and head of the textile printworkshop and dyelab at the fashion and textile institute „IBT“ at „University of the arts“ (Universität der Künste, UdK) Berlin. Dyeing with plants has becomea strong focus, also within her own work. She is part of Hofgrün, an urban gardening project in the yard of the UdK Designbuilding, which is run by UdK members, students and a professional gardener. Here she has established a dyers garden and is growing a variety of dyeplants, like Japanese Indigo, for research, teaching and projects.
As a passionate collector of plants and herbs, she completed a one year education as an herbalist in 2018.
